Chicago's Tipica 78 Orchestra. Chicago, Illinois, (May, 1982)
In the 1970’s, Afro-Cuban & Afro-Caribbean musical genres began to influence many of the youth in Chicago’s Puerto Rican community. This resulted in the emergence of several musical ensembles initiated by young local Puerto Rican musicians, i.e. La Justicia, La Confidencia, La Union, La Mafia del Ritmo, and others. One of these talented ensembles was Tipica 78, who consisted of young talented Puerto Rican musicians who presently have contributed immensely to the development of the music through performances and recordings, not only in Chicago, but throughout the entire country, i.e. Pianist Edwin Sanchez. In this image you see two of Chicago’s most prominent musicians performing with Tipica 78; Bassist Mike Rivera, and Trombonist Angel Melendez. Chicago, Illinois (May, 1982)
