Mayor Harold Washington Marches in Chicago's Puerto Rican Parade. Chicago, Illinois (June 1983)
Since the first Puerto Rican Parade held in downtown Chicago (1966), Chicago’s top politicians have always participated in the event. This image captures the late-Chicago Mayor Harold Washington marching in the 1983 Chicago Puerto Rican Parade. On the mayor’s right hand side you see the late Rafael (“Paloma”) Rios, parade president, and in front of the mayor is Mr. & Ms. Frank Diaz, long-time community residents and pioneers and the Grand Marshall of the parade.
