Chicago's Puerto Rican Parade, Chicago, Illinois (June, 1971)
The first Puerto Rican Parade was celebrated on State Street in Downtown Chicago, in June of 1966. Shortly after that parade, many Puerto Ricans living in the Westtown/Humboldt Park community, took to the streets and rioted for several nights, as a result of police brutality against community residents. This photograph was captured in June of 1971, as Puerto Ricans continue to celebrate their ethnic and cultural pride by parading on State Street. In this image you will see the delegation of Chicago’s Puerto Rican community leaders leading the parade. In this photo you will see individuals like Dr. Juan Cruz, Journalist Torres De Jesus, Attorney Sebastian Rivera, Raul Lorenzi, Cesar Rivera, Ramon Souchet, Trinal Davila, and many others.
