"From Bomba to Hip Hop"
The images in this gallery present the Puerto Rican rap group, Latin Empire, along with Professor/Author Dr. Juan Flores, during their visit to Chicago on May 17-18, 1995. The trio entertained audiences at Columbia College Chicago, and the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, located in Chicago's Puerto Rican community. The event featured a lecture by Dr. Juan Flores, author of the book "From Bomba to Hip Hop: Puerto Rican Culture and Latino Identity", (Columbia University Press 2000), and a musical presentation by the Puerto Rican rap group "Latin Empire". Both events were sponsored by Project Kalinda at the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College in Chicago. The event traces the participation and contributions made by Puerto Ricans in the early development of Hip Hop in New York City.
